Správa železnic (SŽ) is an organisation that manages railway infrastructure in Czechia. Its spokesman is David Kabele and its director general is Tomáš Tóth.[1][2]

Modernisation of the Plzeň–Domažlice line

At the beginning of June 2026, SŽ started in Nýřany, in the Plzeň area, the first stage of construction of the line from Plzeň to Germany, at a cost of CZK 4.49 billion.[1] The project is a rebuilding of a twelve-kilometre single-track line between Plzeň, Nýřany and Chotěšov, on which diesel trains run.[1] The line is to be electrified, and the Vejprnice station and the Tlučná stop are also to be reconstructed.[1] According to the source, the work is to be finished in April 2028.[1] At the start, transport minister Ivan Bednárik (SPD) said that the modernisation is part of the project of a fast railway from Plzeň via Domažlice to Bavaria and that the line serves both international and suburban traffic.[1] In his words, the rebuilding will make it possible to run freight trains up to 740 metres long.[1]

New station building in Nýřany

SŽ announced a public tender for a contractor for a new station building in Nýřany, with a maximum permitted bid price of just under CZK 58.2 million.[1][3] Spokesman Kabele said that construction is to begin in the first quarter of 2027 and be finished at the end of 2028.[1][3] The building is to stand closer to the bus station and offer a waiting room, ticket offices, toilets and a commercial unit, and the whole building and its surroundings are to be barrier-free.[1][2] Operating costs are to be reduced by a photovoltaic plant on the roof and a heat pump.[1][2] The area in front of the station will also be redone, with a car park, and the modernisation of the line will bring new platforms with lifts to the trains.[1][2]

Removal of the building from the original project

At the start of the line modernisation, the mayor of Nýřany, Pavlína Caisová (SNK Nýřany 2022), said she regretted that the new station building had been struck out of the line modernisation project.[1] SŽ director general Tomáš Tóth promised at the time that SŽ would save money for the station construction through savings in further tenders, specifically on the rebuilding of the Nýřany–Heřmanova Huť line, which it planned to start in 2026.[1]

History of the station in Nýřany

The Nýřany station with a freight depot was built in October 1861 as part of the railway linking Bavaria with Plzeň and Prague-Smíchov.[1][3] In 1924–1925 the interior was reconstructed and an upper floor was added, and between 1968 and 1971 a new glazed passenger pavilion was built.[1][3]
