Prague Ring Road
The Prague Ring Road (D0 motorway) is a motorway that, once completed, will encircle Prague and connect nine motorway-standard roads leading out of the capital.[1] Of the planned length of about 83 kilometres, roughly half is in operation.[3] The route follows the border between Prague and the Central Bohemian Region and is divided into construction sections numbered 510 to 520.[1]*
History
The first ideas for roads bypassing Prague date from 1930. A ring road appeared repeatedly in land-use plans, and in 1974 it was included in the Basic Road System as an outer ring of about 70 km.[1]
Construction of the first section, 515 Slivenec–Třebonice, began in autumn 1977 and it opened on 20 September 1983. Part of section 510 between Satalice and Běchovice opened on 12 October 1984 and another part on 5 November 1993. Section 516 Třebonice–Řepy followed on 28 August 2000 and section 517 Řepy–Ruzyně on 29 October 2001. On 20 September 2010 sections 512 to 514 between the D1 motorway and Slivenec, forming the southern part of the ring, were opened. This relieved Prague streets such as the Southern Link and the Barrandov Bridge.[1]
Completion
In December 2024 work began on the six-lane section 511 between Běchovice and the D1 motorway, 12.6 km long.[2] Once completed, it will join the parts of the ring already in operation.[3] Average traffic on the D0 was then about 60,000 vehicles a day, up to 40 percent of them freight.[2] In June 2026 the Road and Motorway Directorate announced that unexpected ground conditions would push the opening of the section from the end of 2027 to the second half of 2028. It plans to complete the remaining three northern sections between Ruzyně and Satalice in 2031.[3]
On the night of 25 September 2026 a lorry collided with a van at kilometre 11 of the ring road in the direction of Zličín. Two people died and six were injured.[4]
