D4 motorway is a Czech motorway running from Prague via Příbram to Nová Hospoda, where it connects to the I/20 road.[1] It links Prague with South Bohemia.[2]
Construction
Construction began in the 1960s. The first section to open was the Zbraslav bypass, opened on 1 December 1966. The motorway reached Příbram in 1989.[1] In 2007 the junction at Nová Hospoda was opened, and in September 2010 the Mirotice – Třebkov section, creating a continuous 6.7 km stretch of the D4.[1]

The Příbram – Písek section
The missing section between Příbram and Písek was the first transport project in Czechia in which the private and public sectors cooperated (PPP).[3] Construction began on 7 June 2021.[1] It took 43 months and was carried out by the VINCI Construction CS group. It created 32 km of new motorway, and 16 km of older sections were modernised. Operation began on 17 December 2024.[2] The section will be operated and maintained for 25 years by the company Via Salis. The state will pay it CZK 17.8 billion and will take over the motorway in 2049.[3] The journey between Prague and Písek was meant to become at least 20 minutes shorter. The whole D4 is monitored by 193 cameras.[3]
