The D1 motorway near Brno is being widened to six lanes in the section from Kývalka to Holubice.

In Brno the D1 motorway intersects the D2 motorway at the Brno-jih grade-separated interchange, which according to the Road and Motorway Directorate of the Czech Republic is one of the busiest in Czechia. The reconstruction of the interchange is part of the widening of the D1 around Brno to six lanes in the section from Kývalka at kilometre 190 to Holubice at kilometre 210.[1] According to the Ministry of Transport's plans, this entire section of about 30 kilometres is to have six lanes by roughly 2032.[2]
During the reconstruction, builders are trying to keep the D1 passable in two lanes.[2] The reconstruction of the Brno-jih interchange began in October 2025, is set by contract at 25 months and is due to finish in November 2027; according to Zdopravy.cz, up to 80,000 cars a day pass through the interchange. [2] By the end of November 2026 the Road and Motorway Directorate wants to move traffic onto the widened carriageway of the D1 and continue work on the second half. [1] From 3 October 2026, builders are to switch traffic onto the new ramp from the D1 from Prague to the D2 towards Bratislava, while the exit from the D2 from Bratislava to the D1 towards Ostrava is to be closed until 28 November 2026. [1] On the D1 in Brno there are, among others, the Brno-centrum exit at kilometre 194 and the Brno-východ exit at kilometre 203.[1][2]
