Prague Public Transit Company
The Prague Public Transit Company (Dopravní podnik hlavního města Prahy, DPP) is a joint-stock company whose sole shareholder is the City of Prague. It operates the Prague metro, trams, buses and trolleybuses, as well as the Petřín funicular and the chairlift in the zoo in Troja.[1][2]*
History
Its direct predecessor was the Electric Companies of the Royal Capital City of Prague, which began operating on 1 September 1897. They ran the tramway and produced electricity. They gradually bought up other lines, including the horse tramway, and in 1907 became the sole operator of tram services in the Prague area.[1]
After 1918 the company was called the Electric Companies of the Capital City of Prague. In 1942 it was merged into the Prague Municipal Enterprises. Once the power, gas and water works had been separated, the remaining transport branch was renamed the Prague Transport Enterprises in September 1946. Under socialism its legal form changed several times. In 1967 a unit was set up to prepare metro operations, and the metro then became part of the company.[1]
On 11 July 1991 the state enterprise was dissolved and its assets were transferred to a newly founded joint-stock company whose sole shareholder is the City of Prague.[1]
Operations
According to figures for 2025, the company operated 3 metro lines, 36 tram lines, 155 bus lines and 2 trolleybus lines. It carried about 998 million passengers and had 11,463 employees. At the end of 2025 its fleet comprised 730 metro cars, 806 trams, 1,238 buses and 37 trolleybuses.[3] The metro is the backbone of the public transport system. Line C is served by M1 cars based at the Kačerov depot.[2]
At the end of September 2026 the company suspended metro line C between Pražského povstání and Chodov for three days. It replaced 460 original wooden sleepers with concrete ones between Budějovická and Kačerov, while replacement XC buses carried passengers.[4]
