The Police of the Czech Republic (Policie České republiky) is the armed security force of the Czech Republic. It was established by an Act of the Czech National Council of 21 June 1991.[1] It is subordinate to the Ministry of the Interior.[1]*
Mission
The police protect the safety of persons and property and public order, prevent crime, carry out tasks under the Code of Criminal Procedure and other tasks in internal order and security entrusted to them by law, European Union regulations and international treaties.[1]
Organisation
The police consist of the Police Presidium of the Czech Republic, units with nationwide competence and regional directorates with the units they manage.[1] The law establishes fourteen regional directorates whose territories coincide with the fourteen regions.[1]
Leadership
The police are headed by the Police President. Since 1 April 2022 this has been Major General Martin Vondrášek, previously first deputy Police President.[2][3] He succeeded Jan Švejdar. His appointment was announced by Interior Minister Vít Rakušan after a selection procedure.[3] As Police President, Vondrášek presented the road accident statistics for 2025 in January 2026.[4]
Road accidents
According to police statistics, 421 people died on Czech roads in 2025, 17 fewer than in 2024 and the lowest number since 1961, when the police began keeping continuous records. In 2025 the police registered 85,518 road accidents, 6,699 fewer than in the previous year.[4] Fines imposed by police officers in 2025 totalled 685 million korunas.[4]
