On 5 October 2026 the Prague Public Transit Company began construction of a tram line from Malovanka to Strahov with a ceremonial laying of the foundation stone. The line is 1.3 kilometres long and the European Union contributes 85 per cent of its financing. Trams are to start running there in 2028. [1][2]

Route and construction

The line is to run from Bělohorská Street along the whole length of Vaníčkova Street to the university dormitories and the existing bus turning area at the junction of Vaníčkova and Turistická streets. It will end at the Stadion Strahov loop. The works include a complete reconstruction of Bělohorská Street between the junctions with Myslbekova and Vaníčkova streets, as well as the reconstruction and widening of Vaníčkova Street. [1][2]

The Prague Public Transit Company will build three pairs of stops on the line: Malovanka, which will be shared with the existing line to Bílá Hora, then Koleje Strahov and Stadion Strahov. The stops in the Stadion Strahov loop will be shared by tram and trolleybus lines. [1]

Contractor and schedule

The construction will be carried out by the association Společnost TT Malovanka, formed by the companies Elektrizace železnic Praha, FIRESTA-Fišer, rekonstrukce, stavby and PEDASTA dopravní stavby. In the tender, which the company announced in October 2025, it offered a price of 824 million crowns excluding VAT, almost a fifth less than the expected 1.02 billion. The company had to wait to sign the contract for a decision of the Úřad pro ochranu hospodářské soutěže, which examined the contract at the instigation of the company T4 Building and found no irregularity. [1][2]

Construction is to take 18 months from the handover of the site. The company had originally planned to start work in spring 2026 and open the line in autumn 2027; because of complications in the tender the schedule is slipping. The line has had a building permit since autumn 2024. [1]

Background

According to the transit company, the line will replace part of the bus service from Strahov to the Dejvická metro station with a higher-capacity, locally emission-free tram service and reduce the number of buses at Vítězné náměstí. Subsidies from the Program Doprava 2021–2027 are to cover up to 85 per cent of eligible expenses. [1][2]
