Israel is a state in which memorial events were planned in various parts of the country on Wednesday 7 October 2026 for the third anniversary of the attack by the movement Hamas of 7 October 2023. In the attack, militants killed 1,200 people and abducted another 251 to the Gaza Strip; according to reports it was the bloodiest attack in Israeli history.[1][2]

The war in the Gaza Strip

According to the local health ministry, controlled by the Hamas government, the subsequent Israeli bombing and ground operations in the Gaza Strip killed 74 thousand people. The UN considers these figures reliable; they do not distinguish civilians from combatants, but according to foreign non-governmental organisations civilians made up more than 80 percent of the victims.[1][2]

Since the ceasefire mediated by the United States on 10 October 2025, Israel has, according to reports, kept control of roughly 53 percent of the Gaza Strip, and its forces later expanded this to almost two thirds of the territory. Hamas controls the remaining third, where roughly two million people live. At this year's anniversary, for the first time no hostages are being held; Israel found the remains of the last of them and brought them from the Gaza Strip in January 2026.[1][2]

The position of Czechia

On Wednesday 7 October 2026 the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned on the network X attempts to turn terrorists into victims and victims into culprits, and stated that terrorism can be neither excused nor relativised. Boris Šťastný (Motoristé), the Minister for Sport, Prevention and Health, said at the memorial event in Prague that Czechia stands by Israel's side.[1][3]
