Jaromír Zůna is the minister of defence of the Czech Republic for SPD [1][2]. According to former defence minister Jana Černochová (ODS), he was first deputy chief of the General Staff from 2019 to 2022 [2].

Cancelled armoured vehicle tender

The Ministry of Defence of the Czech Republic, headed by Zůna, cancelled the tender for 185 armoured four-wheeled vehicles worth 24.7 billion crowns [1]. According to the register of public contracts, reasons deserving special consideration, including economic ones, arose in the procedure [1]. Ministry spokesman Petr Pešek said that the cancellation was carried out in accordance with the Public Procurement Act [1]. The vehicles were to serve mainly military engineers, military medics and the Military Police [1][2].

Černochová wrote on the social network X that Zůna was in the innermost leadership of the General Staff at the time the project was being prepared; Ekonomický deník adds that this is her political interpretation and that the documents submitted do not imply any personal responsibility of Zůna for specific shortcomings of the project [2].

Military studies in the Karlovy Vary Region

Zůna described a project to prepare reserve officers alongside university studies, which is to begin as a pilot in the Karlovy Vary Region [3]. The three-semester voluntary course Protection of the Population is to run in parallel with bachelor’s studies from the third to the fifth semester, four hours a week [3]. After a year, interest is to be assessed, and Zůna expects the programme to be extended to other universities [3].
