In the Rychnov nad Kněžnou district, the incumbent senator Jan Grulich (TOP 09) led Petr Sadovský (ANO) in the Senate election, according to interim results. With roughly 45 percent of polling districts counted on 10 October 2026, Grulich had 61 percent of the votes and Sadovský 39 percent, and a similar ratio had held earlier as well.[1]

Only two candidates ran for the seat. According to Novinky.cz, it is only the second time in the history of the Czech Senate that just two people ran in a district; the first time was in 2022 in the Ústí nad Orlicí district.[2] Grulich was backed by the parties of the current opposition in the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, which did not field a candidate of their own.[1] According to Novinky.cz, he had the support of TOP 09, ODS, KDU-ČSL, STAN, the Czech Pirate Party and the LES party, while Sadovský ran for ANO.[2] Before the election Sadovský said that he was “alone against six parties”.[2]

Grulich is first deputy chairman of the TOP 09 and ODS group in the Senate of the Czech Republic. Before entering politics he worked as a teacher and a primary school headmaster; in the Senate he focuses on schooling and education.[1] He said that he intends to keep working on these areas, including the question of how the field will adapt to new technologies and artificial intelligence.[1]
