Žijeme pro Karvinou and ANO signed a coalition agreement on 2 November 2026; Jan Wolf, who is accused in a football corruption case and denies guilt, is to be mayor again.
The grouping Žijeme pro Karvinou and the ANO movement signed a coalition agreement on 2 November 2026 and will run the city in the new term. The coalition has a majority of 37 votes in the 41-member council. This was reported by the city authorities' spokeswoman Monika Danková.[1][2]
Jan Wolf (Žijeme pro Karvinou) is to be mayor again. He is accused in connection with the football corruption affair and has long denied guilt.[1][2] The current deputy mayors Lukáš Raszyk, Andrzej Bizoń and Radim Slíva are to remain in the city leadership, and Lukáš Heczko is to be a new deputy mayor. Žijeme pro Karvinou will fill all the deputy mayor posts. In the eleven-member city board it will receive eight seats and ANO three.[2] The inaugural meeting of the council is to be held on 9 November.[2]
Election result
The grouping Žijeme pro Karvinou, which ran as an association of SOCDEM and independents, won 63.36 percent of the votes and 30 seats. ANO received 15.98 percent and seven seats, and the Srdcem pro Karvinou coalition (STAN, ODS, Czech Pirate Party and TOP 09) 8.25 percent and four seats.[2][3] Wolf, who is being prosecuted, won more votes than four years ago.[3]
In February 2026 Wolf announced his departure from the Social Democrats and decided to run as a non-party candidate. In March he was accused in connection with the football corruption affair, in which he is suspected of bribery. He remained in office and led the Žijeme pro Karvinou list.[2] Four years ago he led the candidate list of ČSSD, which won more than half of the votes and decided on a coalition with ANO.[2]
A decision is still awaited from the regional court in Ostrava on the motion by the SPD movement, which did not enter the council, to recount the votes. A possible recalculation of the seats should, according to reports, have no significant effect on the coalition's majority.[2]
