Talks on a coalition at Brno city hall after the 2026 municipal elections are being held by the winning Christian Democrats and the STAN movement, ODS and TOP 09, the Greens, the Czech Pirate Party, Fakt Brno TU! and the movement Za Lužánky. The ANO movement, with 11 seats, is not involved in the talks and will probably end up in opposition. If the parties sign a coalition agreement, they would hold 44 of the 55 seats in the assembly.[1][2]

Course of the talks

The parties finished the talks on the programme on Thursday 15 October 2026. In the following week they were to discuss the distribution of responsibilities, and the signing of a coalition agreement was approaching. Representatives of the parties repeatedly say that the talks are constructive and that the programme is to be ambitious. The leader of the winners, Jakub Hruška, reported on the talks with all parties except ANO after the election results were published.[1][2]

Hruška of the Christian Democrats is to be mayor, replacing Markéta Vaňková (ODS) at city hall. She did not run again; ODS went into the election led by the non-party candidate Kamila Zlatušková. Hruška said he wants ANO to have a majority on the oversight committee.[1][2]

Assessment by a political scientist

The political scientist Lubomír Kopeček of Masaryk University described the formation of such a broad coalition as atypical in Czech conditions. In his view the coalition can work, because in Brno's circumstances there are no large differences in topics between the parties. He named as a possible problem the historical animosities between ODS and the Greens and the question of whether this will affect the Greens' entry into the coalition, which they do not rule out at present. According to Kopeček, it is not good for a single critic to remain in the assembly.[1][2]
