Markéta Vaňková (ODS) is the mayor of Brno. She has headed the city since 2018.[1]
2026 municipal elections
Vaňková is not standing in the municipal elections of 9 and 10 October 2026. The joint candidate list of the ODS, TOP 09 and independents is led in her place by the non-party member Kamila Zlatušková. After the 2022 elections, which were won by the coalition of the ODS and TOP 09 with 16 seats, a broad coalition of the ODS, TOP 09, ANO, KDU-ČSL with STAN and the then ČSSD was formed in Brno.[1]
Statements on city projects
On the planned reconstruction of the Mahen Theatre, with a rough estimate of around two billion crowns, Vaňková said that 100 million crowns had been invested in the monument restoration of the theatre since 2006 and that a complete reconstruction would be demanding in both time and money, comparable to the reconstruction of the Janáček Theatre for 700 million crowns.[2]
On the preparation of the area around the future Brno hlavní nádraží, she said that the city cannot wait for the state to begin building the station, and therefore continues preparing infrastructure, including the newly completed Kalová street. If the station were not built, these investments could, in her view, be classed as wasted. Správa železnic, according to its spokesperson, said that construction of the new station will begin no earlier than the early 2030s.[3]
