Kladno is a statutory city in the Central Bohemian Region. According to the Czech Statistical Office, together with Mladá Boleslav, Kolín, Příbram and Kutná Hora it is one of the five largest towns of the region; apart from Kladno, only Mladá Boleslav holds the status of a statutory city in the Central Bohemian Region.[1]

District

Together with the Praha-západ and Praha-východ districts, Kladno District is among the districts of the Central Bohemian Region with a population density of more than 200 inhabitants per km². All three are also in the top ten districts of the whole country by population density.[1][2]

Theatre and memorials to victims of totalitarian regimes

In front of the Kladno Town Theatre there are commemorative tiles dedicated to people connected with the town who had trouble with totalitarian regimes, among them the actors Anna Letenská, Jiřina Štěpničková, Vlasta Burian and Václav Stýblo. The tiles and comics about them are prepared with pupils by Gymnázium Kladno.[3] The school's Kladno projects also gave rise to an educational trail about a tragedy of the Second World War, in which about forty people died on the edge of the town after an Allied aircraft jettisoned its bombs in an emergency.[3] General Jaroslav Selner, who fought at Tobruk and on the Eastern Front, is a native of Kladno and a graduate of the gymnasium.[3]

Economy

The company NKT, which received a fine of CZK 910 million from the Office for the Protection of Competition for taking part in a cartel of cable manufacturers, is based in Kladno.[4]
