Klimkovice is a town whose mayor is Jaroslav Varga.[1][2]
Flood protection
Since February 2026 the state enterprise Povodí Odry has been building a dry reservoir on the Rakovec stream, intended to protect Klimkovice and the Ostrava borough of Polanka nad Odrou.[1][2] The cost exceeds 47 million Czech korunas, completion is planned for the end of 2027, and the construction is also financed by the European Union from the Operational Programme Environment 2021–2027.[1][2] Under normal conditions the reservoir does not hold back water and fills only during torrential rain.[1][2] The main element is an earth dam 8.5 metres high and 133 metres long.[1][2] The construction site lies outside the built-up area of the town, about 200 metres north-west of the D47 motorway bridge.[1][2]
Povodí Odry is also preparing a dry reservoir at Polančice in the area for almost 90 million Czech korunas, together with the regulation of just under two kilometres of the stream of the same name; both projects are to begin in 2027.[2]
Mexiko pond and land consolidation
The town has long been dealing with the condition of the dam of the Mexiko pond, which is at risk of damage, so the site has gradually lost part of its recreational importance.[1][2] After the reservoir on the Rakovec is completed, the dam is to be repaired by the Státní pozemkový úřad.[1][2] The Ministry of Agriculture approved comprehensive land consolidation in the cadastral area of Klimkovice in March 2008.[1]
