Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) is a Czech political party that has sat in the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic since the election of October 2025 and takes part in the governing coalition.[1][2] The party is led by Tomio Okamura, who is also Speaker of the Chamber.[3]

2025 Chamber of Deputies election

In the October 2025 election to the Chamber of Deputies, the SPD won 7.78% of the vote and 15 of the 200 seats. This made it the fifth-strongest group in the Chamber, after ANO 2011 (80 seats), the SPOLU coalition (52), Mayors and Independents (22) and the Czech Pirate Party (18). It was followed by Motoristé sobě with 13 seats.[1]

Government and coalition

The SPD governs together with ANO and the Motorists; the coalition holds 108 seats.[2] The SPD has put forward, for example, Minister of Agriculture Martin Šebestyán and Minister of Defence Jaromír Zůna.[4][5] The Speaker of the Chamber is Tomio Okamura.[2]

Positions

In October 2026 Tomio Okamura proposed that at the European Union summit in Brussels the Czech Republic should press for talks between European leaders and Russia on peace in Ukraine. According to him, nobody at the morning coalition meeting of ANO, the SPD and the Motorists objected to this position. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) said after the cabinet meeting that Okamura has no say in European Council matters and that the mandate for the summit is approved by the government.[3] Okamura also said that the Czech Republic should turn to the cheapest available energy sources and not rely on great powers.[3]
