The chairman of the SPD movement and of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, Tomio Okamura, commented on 10 October 2026 at the movement’s election headquarters in Prague on the results of the local elections and the first round of the Senate elections. In his view the results confirmed SPD’s nationwide support, which stands at around eight percent.[1][2]
SPD fielded 17 candidates in the Senate elections. The movement’s expectation that at least one of them would advance to the second round was not met; three SPD candidates finished third in the first round, which is not an advancing place. The movement was to discuss with ANO in the governing coalition how to proceed ahead of the second round, which was to take place a week later. The chairman of the SPD parliamentary group, Radim Fiala, called supporting the coalition candidates logical at a press conference.[1][2]
Okamura said that cooperation between ANO and SPD already when the candidate lists were drawn up might have brought a better result. According to him, in the spring he proposed fielding one joint candidate of the coalition in each Senate district. Judging by the course of the first round, the governing coalition did not win a majority in the Senate, for which it needed 27 seats.[1]
In the local elections, according to Okamura, SPD succeeded in most regional capitals and the movement’s candidates will also enter councils in some smaller municipalities. He called Prague more difficult for SPD because of the more liberal outlook of its residents and expressed hope that the movement would cross the five-percent threshold in the capital. The lead candidate of the Prague list, Milan Urban, said after 20:00 that it was too early to comment on the Prague results because the large districts were only then being counted. Fiala said that the movement was analysing the election results and would draw a strategy for the coming years from them.[1]
