Conservationists have published on their website a report summarising wolf monitoring in the Czech-Polish borderland over one year from May 2025. It was produced in the cross-border Interreg CZ-PL project. In Broumovsko in the Hradec Králové Region, wild game makes up more than nine tenths of the wolves' diet.[1][2]

Findings of the report

In the monitored area from the Lusatian Mountains to the Jeseníky, 18 wolf territories were confirmed, in which 16 packs and two pairs live. A wolf-dog hybrid was not found in any of the monitored areas. For the Broumov Highlands and surroundings, the report estimates 20 to 27 wolves living in three packs that extend across the border.[1][2]

Livestock, mainly sheep, make up 6.9 percent of the diet in Broumovsko, the highest share of all monitored areas. In the Orlické hory, on Králický Sněžník and in the Frýdlant region the share is around three percent. The main component of the diet is roe deer, with wild boar the other significant one.[1][2]

Two wolves from Broumovsko have worn GPS collars since spring, fitted after a reported close encounter between a wolf and a person. According to the report, they are shy, do not seek proximity to people and live in concealment.[1][2]

Expert opinion

Miroslav Kutal of Mendel University in Brno, the scientific guarantor of the project Hnutí Duha Šelmy, said that the higher share of livestock is linked to the larger number of sheep farms in Broumovsko. According to him, the securing of pastures is improving, but some farmers still do not meet the minimum requirements of the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic for securing pastures. He also said that nothing points to wolves specialising in livestock.[1][2]

The project, covering a contiguous area of 7,000 square kilometres, is run by Hnutí Duha Šelmy, Mendel University in Brno and the Polish Park Narodowy Gór Stołowych; in Broumovsko they cooperate with the Broumovsko Protected Landscape Area.[1][2]
