Conservationists from the organisation WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) released on 29 September 2026 about 2,100 sterlets into the Thaya and Morava rivers in the Břeclav district, at four locations [1]. The fish come from the breeding of Rybníkářství Pohořelice and are fitted with a chip that will make it possible to determine where they move [1].
The sterlet is one of the native species of large European rivers. According to Lukáš Hrábek, spokesman for WWF Česko, its numbers are now too low for the species to reproduce sufficiently on its own and resettle the rivers [1]. Unlike other sturgeons, it does not migrate to the sea, which is why it can be stocked artificially in Czechia [1]. Their ancestors were wild sturgeons from the Danube [1].
Sturgeon expert Bořek Drozd said that it is important to monitor how the fish thrive in the river and what conditions they find there [1]. The release follows a spring action in which WWF released into the Morava, in the Litovelské Pomoraví Protected Landscape Area near Olomouc, small fry hatched in incubation boxes directly in the river [1].
