Ostrava hlavní nádraží is a railway station in Ostrava that forms one of the end points of the section between the stations Ostrava-Svinov and Ostrava hlavní nádraží, which is part of the Ostrava railway junction. According to Správa železnic, this section belonged to the parts of the junction that had not yet been modernised.[1]

Modernisation of the Ostrava railway junction

The Central Commission of the Ministry of Transport approved the feasibility study for the Ostrava railway junction, which set out the further course of project preparation.[1] The selected variant provides for a complete overhaul of the section between the stations Ostrava-Svinov and Ostrava hlavní nádraží and for the construction of a new grade-separated junction, intended to eliminate conflicting train movements in the individual directions.[1]

Pavel Surý, then Director General of SŽDC, said of the works that they envisage "tripling the section between the stations Ostrava-Svinov and Ostrava hlavní nádraží to three tracks, widening to a four-track layout within the area of the Ostrava hlavní nádraží station".[1] In his words, the modernisation is to "allow trains to pass at a speed of 120 km/h".[1] As part of the works on the whole junction, the platform at the Ostrava-Stodolní stop is, among other things, to be lengthened from 200 to 300 metres, and the Ostrava střed station is also to be rebuilt, with step-free access to the platforms at a height of 550 mm above the top of the rail.[1]

The total investment costs of the selected variant were estimated at 7.648 billion crowns.[1] According to the plan, the project was expected to be carried out in 2021 to 2025; in the year the report was issued, a tender for a designer of the preparatory documentation and the project intent was planned, to be followed in 2019 by a tender for the preparation of the project documentation.[1]

Bridge near the main station

Within the area of Ostrava hlavní nádraží there is a railway bridge over Hlučínská Street in the Ostrava district of Přívoz, dating from 1932.[2] According to Správa železnic, around 300 trains pass over it every day.[2] Správa železnic began the reconstruction of this bridge as a project to precede the modernisation of the entire Ostrava railway junction, with the aim of improving the technical condition of the bridge and increasing safety of the traffic below it.[2]

During the reconstruction the bridge is to receive new supports and a steel-and-concrete structure, which is to reduce its maintenance requirements, while retaining a shape reminiscent of the original structure.[2] To keep train services running, the reconstruction was divided into two stages, during which tracks, switches and other parts of the railway infrastructure are to be replaced and drainage of the road beneath the bridge improved.[2] Widening the outer bridge openings is to allow separate lanes for cyclists.[2]

With the start of the preparatory works, tram service in Hlučínská Street was interrupted; at the beginning of summer the street was also closed to car traffic for approximately a year, except for vehicles of the integrated rescue system and public transport buses, and safe passage for pedestrians was ensured throughout the construction.[2] After the reconstruction of the bridge is completed, the renewal of the tram line running beneath it is to follow.[2] The works on the bridge, worth 328,379,831 crowns, are carried out by the companies TSS GRADE and IDS – Inženýrské a dopravní stavby Olomouc.[2] Správa železnic in Ostrava planned to follow the renewal of the bridge with the reconstruction of the Dalimilův podjezd underpass in Mariánskohorská Street.[2]

Status

The Ostrava hlavní nádraží station and the adjacent infrastructure are operated by Správa železnic, a state organisation responsible for the administration and modernisation of the railway network in the Czech Republic.[1][2]
