No carrier applied in the tender for a direct air route from Brno to Frankfurt am Main. The route was sought by the city of Brno together with the South Moravian Region. The information was confirmed by Filip Poňuchálek, spokesman of the Brno city hall.[1][2]
The planned route
The two authorities offered annual support totalling three million euros, or about 75 million crowns, with each planning to contribute up to 1.5 million euros a year. The European Union agreed to the public support. The route was to operate four times a week, and a contract was being prepared for three years. The authorities wanted to launch service in spring 2027; originally mid-2026 had been mentioned, but it was necessary to wait for the position of the European Union.[1][2] Regional governor Jan Grolich (KDU-ČSL) had earlier described the link with Frankfurt as an opportunity for the whole region in terms of business, tourism and culture.[2]
Next steps
The next steps are to come out of talks between the city and the region. According to Czech Radio, to which Deník refers, a new tender or a change of destination airport, for example to Warsaw or Amsterdam, is under consideration.[1] Municipal elections take place in October 2026 and may bring a new leadership to Brno.[2]
Earlier connections
Brno has been without a year-round route to a major hub since February 2019, when the carrier BMI Regional cancelled its connection to Munich, which had operated since November 2015. Before Frankfurt the city tried for Amsterdam, but suitable arrival and departure times could not be obtained.[2]
