Moravské zemské muzeum is a museum institution whose experts worked with archaeologists from Masaryk University on the archaeological survey of the Brno Central Cemetery in Brno. The 2021 survey was initiated by the association Paměť on the basis of testimony about the secret burial of the remains of victims of the communist regime.[1][2]

According to Filip Chvátal (KDU-ČSL), Deputy Mayor of Brno, the survey uncovered 1,107 urns and identified 605 of them.[1][2] The mass grave at the Brno Central Cemetery holds people persecuted by the communist regime, figures from cultural and scientific life, and people with no relatives or of unknown identity. [2] The design by the sculptor Dušan Váňa includes 1,107 carved crosses, one for each person buried, and a central stainless-steel cross rising above the surface of the slab. [2] According to the city authorities, a memorial plaque of Corten steel measuring 150 × 150 cm is to be created on the site of the mass grave by the end of 2026. [1] The plaque is planned for cemetery section 109, grave number one. [2] Its design came out of an art competition. [1]
