University Hospital Ostrava
University Hospital Ostrava (Fakultní nemocnice Ostrava) is a university hospital located on 17. listopadu Street in Ostrava-Poruba. It has 1,233 beds, more than 4,200 employees and 38 clinics, departments, centres, laboratories and institutes. It serves 1.2 million inhabitants of the Moravian-Silesian Region and, in some specialities, patients from neighbouring regions.[1]*
History
The hospital continues the Epidemic Hospital in Ostrava-Zábřeh, which opened in 1912. From 1942 to 1945 it served as a German military hospital, and at the end of the Second World War it was badly damaged in an air raid.[2] In 1959 the government decided to build a new hospital in Ostrava-Poruba. Construction began in 1965, the outpatient building opened in 1971 and the inpatient pavilions in 1973. The hospital gained university hospital status in 1990. An inpatient block on the Poruba site opened in 1994 and a new psychiatric pavilion in 2022.[2]
Activity
Each year the hospital carries out more than 760,000 outpatient examinations and almost 16,000 operations and admits over 45,000 patients. Its equipment includes a CyberKnife radiosurgery system and a da Vinci surgical robot.[1]
Prevention event in central Ostrava (2026)
On 28 September 2026 the hospital held a prevention event with 13 stations on Masarykovo náměstí in Ostrava. In a single afternoon it carried out more than 1,500 examinations and consultations, such as blood pressure, blood sugar and eye pressure checks. Doctors found two cases of advanced diabetes, seven people with very high blood pressure and one patient with a serious heart condition who needed immediate treatment.[3]
