According to the website of Divadlo Semafor, Divadlo Na zábradlí was founded by Jiří Suchý together with Vyskočil, L. Hermanová and others. After the first play, If a Thousand Clarinets, the others made it clear that Suchý was not to appear on stage. After partly leaving the theatre he remained there as an author, for example of the play Faust, Margaret, the Maid and I [1]. In 1959 Suchý, together with Jiří Šlitr and F. Havlík, founded his own theatre, Semafor [1].

Václav Havel at the theatre

From 1960 Václav Havel worked at the theatre, first as a stagehand and later as a dramaturg and assistant director. There he met the director Jan Grossman, who guided him as an author [2]. On 3 December 1963 the theatre staged Havel's play The Garden Party, directed by Otomar Krejča [2].
