The Faculty of Arts, Charles University (FF UK) has its main building on náměstí Jana Palacha in Prague [1][2].
Surroundings of the Faculty
The Capital City of Prague is preparing a comprehensive renovation of náměstí Jana Palacha. After the shooting at the faculty on 21 December 2023, spontaneous memorial sites appeared around the building, which were later replaced by a memorial object that still stands on the square today. In 2025, a plaque bearing the names of the victims was added near the memorial. [3] In October 2026, Prague City Hall approved the establishment of a commission tasked with preparing a permanent memorial site that would fit into the new design of the square. The commission has until the end of June 2027 to complete the task. Prague councillors established a working group to prepare the terms of an architectural and artistic competition for the permanent memorial site; its members include, among others, representatives of the faculty, the Prague City Gallery, Prague City Hall, and the Spojeni nadějí association. [3] Deputy Mayor Petr Hlaváček (STAN) stated that the terms need to be prepared very carefully and in cooperation with people from the faculty [1][2].
In the shooting, 14 people were killed and another 25 students or teachers were injured. [3]
The explanatory report accompanying the approved document states that further steps should take into account the architectural, urban-planning and heritage context of the space, as well as a sensitive approach towards the bereaved, the injured and other affected persons. [4]
