On 21 October 2026, after the municipal elections, representatives of the STAN movement and Zlín 21 met in Zlín. According to the STAN leader Věra Stojar, they agreed to negotiate on the options for a broad coalition, and Zlín 21 presented its programme priorities. ANO, whose mayor Jiří Korec led the city for two terms, remains outside the coalition negotiations.[1][2][3]

Election results and coalition options

ANO won the municipal elections in Zlín with ten of 41 seats. STAN gained nine seats, Zlín 21 eight, Společně pro Zlín five, ODS four, Zlín Srdcem and the Czech Pirate Party three, and SPD two. In the outgoing term, STAN and Zlín 21 were in opposition.[1][3]

After the elections, a three-party bloc of ODS, Společně pro Zlín and Zlín Srdcem and the Pirates formed. A coalition of STAN with the bloc would have the narrowest majority of 21 votes, while a broad coalition with Zlín 21 would have 29 votes. Stojar said the bloc rejected the narrower coalition, so the option of a broad coalition remained. Aleš Dufek (KDU-ČSL), spokesman of the bloc, said earlier that a coalition with a majority of one vote is less stable.[2][3]

The mayoral post and next steps

After the talks, Stojar did not name a candidate for mayor. Zlín 21 named its leader Čestmír Vančura as its candidate. According to Vančura, the post-election talks have moved on and the formation of a broad coalition is more realistic. Stojar said that an earlier unofficial offer of the mayoral post to Vančura was made in a different political situation and that the mayor will be decided only after a functioning coalition is formed.[1][2]

On Thursday 22 October 2026, STAN was to meet the bloc, then Zlín 21 the bloc, and at the turn of the week the first joint meeting of all three sides was to take place. The inaugural meeting of the city council is to be held on Thursday 5 November 2026.[2]
