The Elbe is a river that flows through several regions of the Czech Republic and is their main watercourse. According to the Czech Statistical Office, almost the whole territory of the Hradec Králové Region belongs to its basin, and only a marginal part of the Broumovský výběžek drains into the Oder basin. The Elbe's tributaries in this region are the Orlice and the Metuje.[1]
Course of the river
In the Pardubice Region the lowest point of the region lies on the surface of the Elbe near Kojice, at an elevation of 201 m above sea level.[2] The Vltava flows into the Elbe at Mělník.[3] In the Central Bohemian Region the lowest point of the riverbed of the Elbe is in Mělník District, 153 m above sea level.[4]
The largest watercourse of the Ústí nad Labem Region is the Elbe, into which the Ohře and the Bílina flow from the left. The level of the Elbe at Hřensko, at an elevation of 115 m above sea level, is the lowest point of the region and at the same time the lowest-lying place in the Czech Republic.[5] The Bílina flows into the Elbe within the territory of the city of Ústí nad Labem, which describes the river as an important European waterway used for freight transport and recreational navigation.[6]
