Opava had a study prepared for a new bus station in the area behind the Opava východ railway station. According to iDNES.cz, the station is to have eight departure and four arrival bays and replace the stops in front of the station in Janská street.[1]

Current situation

In Janská street in front of the east station, suburban and regional buses meet city transport, passenger and freight traffic and pedestrians. According to iDNES.cz, the adjacent junction is among the busiest in the city, and traffic comes to a standstill there at peak times. There is also no place where drivers could park vehicles between runs.[1]

Proposed solution

The city wants to keep buses, trains and city transport close together and free up space in front of the station. The new terminal would be built between the railway and the premises of the Stavebniny DEK and Lidl stores. Access is to lead along Anenská street, which is not prepared for such a load, particularly at its crossing with Těšínská street. The city hall's spokesman Roman Konečný said the city has held preliminary talks about the necessary land with Správa železnic and about the traffic solution with Lidl. According to him, a third platform at the station is also being prepared separately.[1]

Mayor Tomáš Navrátil called the current situation in Janská street a problem for passengers and traffic around the station. Petr Popadinec, the councillor for transport, said the study shows that the station fits into the area and that the land, bus access and the connection to Těšínská street remain to be settled.[1] Services to Bruntál, Krnov, Ostrava, the Hlučín area and Hradec nad Moravicí would depart from the new terminal.[1]

Background

According to iDNES.cz, buses originally converged on Náměstí Svobody; in the early 1980s a station in Těšínská street opened, which operated until 15 June 2003, after which buses moved to the front of the Opava východ station. The city opened the question of a new terminal publicly in 2023 in a survey on the future of transport.[1]
