Seznam.cz is a Czech internet company based in Prague. It operates a search engine and other online services and describes itself as the Czech internet number one.[1][2]

The company and its services

According to the operator's website, Seznam has its own data centres and offers over 30 services. They are looked after by more than 1,900 employees, whom the company calls Seznamáci. The company says of itself that it is a platform for the public, but also for entrepreneurs and publishers. The values it declares include innovation, openness and decency, in technology, in business and in life. In the area of responsibility it focuses, according to its website, on supporting the non-profit sector and charity and on strengthening media literacy. The company's trade name is Seznam.cz, a.s.[2]

History

Seznam has been part of the Czech internet since 1996. From a plain web directory it gradually became a domestic online business, which today offers more than 30 services and products. The operator's website records its development year by year.[2]

The company also has a mascot, the so-called Pes Seznam (Seznam Dog). The operator's website describes its story, from the first idea to its current digital form.[2]

Search engine and competition

Hospodářské noviny reports that there are only six countries in the world where Google does not hold a monopoly in internet search. They include Russia, Belarus, Japan, South Korea, China and Czechia. The Czech version of Google was launched in 2006, but unlike in most other markets the American company did not manage to defeat its domestic rival Seznam.cz.[3]

The entrepreneur and IT commentator Patrick Zandl said in an interview for the paper that Seznam has never made a fundamental mistake that would have damaged its business, and that its revenues and profit keep growing. According to Zandl, its success does not lie in Czechs, as conservative patriots, preferring a domestic firm to its American opponent either.[3]

The Médium.cz platform

Seznam also runs the blogging platform Médium.cz. A press release of 16 June 2026 states that the company has long monitored improvements to the user experience and quality of this service. For that reason it is now checking more closely authors whose profiles violate the terms of service, and openly labels accounts run by communication and PR agencies.[1]
