The Liberecký tunel is located on the I/35 road in Liberec and forms part of the city bypass along that road. The tunnel has two tubes, one running in the direction from Prague to Děčín and the other in the opposite direction from Děčín to Prague [1][2].

Regular maintenance

The technical condition of the tunnel and its safety systems are inspected as standard twice a year [1][2]. Maintenance for the Road and Motorway Directorate (Ředitelství silnic a dálnic) is carried out by the company EUROVIA CZ, which is part of the VINCI Construction CS Group [1][2].

Iveta Štočková, spokesperson of the VINCI Construction CS Group, described the scope of the work: “The current maintenance of the tunnel will include in particular cleaning of the roadway, washing of the tunnel walls and ceilings, cleaning of the drainage, inspection and maintenance of lighting and traffic signs, and other diagnostic work. The inspection will also include verifying the functioning of the tunnel's safety and technological systems.” [1][2]

Closure of the tubes in October 2026

From 9 to 12 October 2026 the tunnel is to be closed tube by tube in succession, with traffic in both directions moving into one lane of the opposite tube, that is, in a 1+1 mode [1][2]. According to the plan, the first stage is to close the tube in the direction from Prague to Děčín from 18:00 on Friday, 9 October 2026, to 16:00 on Saturday, 10 October. The second stage is to close the tube in the direction from Děčín to Prague from 16:00 on Saturday, 10 October, to 4:00 on Monday, 12 October [1][2]. The sources say that the work in the tunnel cannot be done under normal traffic, so the tube concerned must always be closed completely [1].
