The Integrovaný dopravní systém Jihomoravského kraje, abbreviated IDS JMK, is a way of providing public transport in the South Moravian Region in which the individual modes of transport cooperate and form a connected network of lines with a uniform tariff, uniform conditions of carriage and regular service intervals[1]. The system is operated by the company KORDIS JMK, a. s.[2]

Origin and gradual expansion

IDS JMK came into being in stages. The first stage began operation on 1 January 2004 and included 112 municipalities[1]. From 1 January 2005 a further 49 municipalities in the Tišnov area were added in stage 2A, and from 1 September 2005 24 municipalities in the Sokolnice and Zbraslav areas in stage 2B[1]. On 11 December 2005 stage 3A was launched in the Slavkov, Bučovice and Vyškov areas, with 22 new municipalities and city transport in Vyškov[1]. From 1 July 2006 the first part of stage 3B in the Ivančice area, with 21 municipalities, was integrated, and from 1 September 2006 the second part of stage 3B in the Židlochovice area, with 29 municipalities[1]. On 4 March 2007 stage E4, covering the Boskovice area, was launched, and in mid-2008 stage E4B in the Vyškov area[1]. From 14 December 2008 a total of 124 municipalities in the Hodonín and Břeclav areas were integrated[1]. On 1 July 2010 the last part of the region, the Znojmo area with 163 municipalities, was integrated, which according to KORDIS JMK completed the integration of the entire territory of the South Moravian Region[1]. These expansions brought changes to the routing of regional bus lines, simplified and regularised service, the introduction of uniform fares and uniform two- or three-digit line numbering, new timetables, and the harmonisation of fares and conditions of carriage[1].

Expansion beyond the region

After the integration of the whole region was completed, only smaller expansions followed, according to KORDIS JMK, based on the interest and needs of municipalities outside the region[1]. From 1 March 2014 the system was extended to Myjava in Slovakia, from 1 May 2014 a seasonal link operated by line 816 to Drosendorf in Austria, and from 1 July 2014 IDS JMK was extended to the Bystřice area as far as Rovné-Divišov[1]. From 1 January 2015 city line 370 in Bystřice nad Pernštejnem was integrated, and from 1 July 2015 the Turistbus began running, connecting Mikulov with Valtice and Podivín via Poysdorf in Austria[1]. From 12 December 2019 IDS JMK tickets began to be recognised between Znojmo and Retz in Austria, and also on line 334 between Nedvědice and Bystřice nad Pernštejnem[1]. From 1 January 2020 the system was extended to Staré Město, Kunovice and Uherské Hradiště[1].

Reasons for introduction

According to KORDIS JMK, the main reason for introducing the integrated system in the early 2000s was the growing confusion and inefficiency of the earlier transport, in which, as the number of carriers grew, passengers lost their bearings among a tangle of timetables and differing fares and switched to cars[1]. According to the same source, after the introduction of uniform fares and regular service, it became apparent in many European countries, including Czechia, that the number of public transport passengers began to rise again[1].

Operator
