In the night of 1 November 2026 the Hořec Hotel, built in 1908, burned in the centre of Pec pod Sněžkou; firefighters evacuated 35 people and paramedics treated three.

The fire at the Hořec Hotel was an event in the night of 1 November 2026 in the centre of Pec pod Sněžkou in Trutnov District, in which the roof and upper part of the hotel building, built in 1908, burned down [1][2].

The firefighting operation

Firefighters were called to the fire at 01:38 and brought it under control at 9:00 the same day [1][2]. They sent 13 units and more than 20 vehicles to the scene, including three aerial ladder trucks, and declared the second of four levels of fire alarm [1][2]. According to the server Novinky.cz, a total of 65 firefighters took part in the firefighting in shifts [4]. Fire service spokesman Petr Svoboda said that when the first unit arrived, part of the roof was already in flames and the fire was spreading quickly, which according to the firefighters made work inside the building so difficult that the first group of firefighters had to withdraw from the building because of the rapid development of the fire [1][2][3]. Because of collapsing floors and ceilings, the firefighters then concentrated on extinguishing the fire from outside [1][2][3]. The sheet-metal roof of the building made the firefighting more difficult [1][2][3]. They used water from the local hydrant network and from the Úpa river, and also deployed vacuum pumps to remove extinguishing water from the interior of the hotel [1][2][3]. After the fire was brought under control, the firefighters dismantled the roof structure and searched for and extinguished hidden hot spots [1][2][3]. The firefighters closed the road past the hotel towards the cable car to Sněžka [1][2][3].

Evacuation and injuries

35 people were evacuated from the hotel and found shelter in the restaurant of the hotel across the street [1][2][3][4]. Paramedics treated three people at the scene [1][2][3][4]. Paramedic service spokeswoman Lucie Hanušová said that two people had inhaled smoke, one of them a firefighter, and the third person treated was a patient with acute neurological problems; after treatment, nobody had to be taken to hospital [1][2][3]. According to Hanušová, given the scale of the incident the operations centre sent to the scene, besides five medical and physician crews, also an operations inspector and a vehicle for major incidents [1][2][3].

Cause and circumstances

The fire was reported by a hotel employee who was woken by smoke in the night, and the first fire crew arrived at the scene after 12 minutes [1][2][3]. The cause of the fire was not known immediately after it [1][2][3]. Spokesman Svoboda said that the damage would be considerable and would be counted in millions of crowns [1][2][3]. According to the hotel's website, the Hořec Hotel offered accommodation in double and triple rooms and had 18 rooms with a capacity of up to 44 guests [1][2][3].
