Francouzská Street is a street in Prague along which tram lines 4, 21 and 22 run. The street is lined with two-storey residential buildings.*
Fire in September 2026
On 26 September 2026 at around 18:00, firefighters were called to Francouzská Street to a fire on the first floor of a two-storey building, from which thick smoke was rising [1]. Firefighters declared the second degree of fire alert out of four [2]. "We are rescuing and evacuating people both through the inside of the building and with the help of aerial equipment," said Vojtěch Rotschedl, spokesperson for the Prague firefighters [1]. People were rescued from windows using ladder vehicles [1]. Police officers also joined the operation [1].
Before 18:20 firefighters managed to suppress the open flames [2]. After 20:00 they announced that the fire had been localised, meaning its further spread had been prevented [2].
Injuries and traffic restrictions
Eight rescued people were examined at the scene [1]. A woman of about 70 was taken to hospital with a hand injury [1]. One of the firefighters also had to be transported for surgical treatment of a hand injury, said Karel Kirs, spokesperson for the ambulance service [1].
Because of the operation, car traffic in Francouzská Street and tram lines 4, 21 and 22 were halted for more than two hours [2]. According to the Prague public transport company, trams started running again at about 20:20 [2].
