Pec pod Sněžkou lies in the Trutnov area in the Giant Mountains. It is the starting point of the cable car to Sněžka, the highest mountain of the Czech Republic (1,603 m above sea level).[1]
After a complete replacement, the cable car was put into operation on its first section in December 2013 and on the second in February 2014. Four-person cabins replaced the earlier open double chairs. At the same time a new lower station was built closer to the town, and unlike the 1949 cable car, the installation crosses the river Úpa. The transport capacity of the cable car from Pec is at most 250 people per hour.[1]
According to the administrators of the Krkonoše National Park, up to 9,000 hikers a day head for the summit of Sněžka in the summer season, not counting cable car passengers.[1] The multimedia exhibition Sněžka 1603 was opened in the lower station of the cable car on 8 October 2026.[1][2]
