The apartment fire in Ostrava-Mariánské Hory broke out on the afternoon of Thursday 1 October 2026 in Výstavní street. Almost thirty people were in the apartment building at the time of the fire, five of whom inhaled smoke and were handed over to the care of paramedics. The incident required the intervention of firefighters, police and the medical rescue service and became the subject of a criminal investigation on suspicion of the misdemeanour of general endangerment by negligence.[1][2]*
Course of the intervention
Firefighters learned of the fire shortly after half past three in the afternoon. Professional units from the Ostrava-Zábřeh and Ostrava-Fifejdy stations and volunteer firefighters from Radvanice and Nová Ves went to the scene.[1] Already when the units arrived, leaping flames were visible from the windows of the apartment on the fourth floor and the apartment's living room was completely engulfed by the fire, said Kamila Langerová, spokeswoman for the regional firefighters.[1] An adult and two children who were in the apartment when the fire started, as well as 23 other people from the apartment building, left the building before the firefighters arrived. The units had to rescue another person from a smoke-filled apartment on another floor.[1] The fire was localised within ten minutes of the firefighters' arrival, and the damage was preliminarily estimated at two million crowns.[1]
Injuries and treatment
A total of five people, two small children and three adults, ended up in the care of paramedics.[2] All those affected inhaled combustion fumes, and one of the women also suffered minor superficial burns on her lower limbs, said Lukáš Humpl, spokesman for the Moravian-Silesian paramedics. All those affected were out of danger to life and after treatment were taken to the Městská nemocnice Ostrava.[1][2]
Investigation
The cause of the fire remains the subject of an investigation, in which police officers are also involved. According to Nikol Bočková, spokeswoman for the Ostrava police, criminal proceedings were initiated in the matter on suspicion of committing the misdemeanour of general endangerment by negligence.[1][2] A forensic technician and expert were to search the fire site on the afternoon of 2 October.[1]
