Czech Radio Ostrava

Czech Radio Ostrava (Český rozhlas Ostrava) is the regional station of the public broadcaster Czech Radio for the Moravian-Silesian Region. It broadcasts news, current affairs and music programmes.[1] It has broadcast regularly since 1 July 1929, originally under the name Radiojournal Moravská Ostrava. It was the second regional station after Brno.[1][2]*

History

The first studio was located in the fire station on Denisovo, now Smetanovo, Square. In 1937 the radio moved to a building on Hviezdoslavova Street, now Dr. Šmerala Street, where music and drama studios with control rooms were set up.[1] During the Second World War the Germans took away the broadcasting equipment.[2] From 21 to 28 August 1968 Ostrava radio broadcast uncensored information. During the normalisation that followed, almost 80 per cent of programme staff had to leave.[1]

Music

The Ostrava Radio Orchestra was revived at the beginning of the 1960s.[1] The radio's ensembles also included the Ostravanka brass band and the Technik cimbalom band. Over the years Studio 1 hosted recordings by Marie Rottrová, Hana Zagorová, Věra Špinarová and Karel Kryl, among others.[2]

Death of Jiří Tieftrunk (2026)

Music journalist Jiří Tieftrunk died on 27 September 2026 at the age of 75. He had worked with Ostrava radio since 1997 as an expert on older popular music. He presented the programme Oldies aneb Historie z černých drážek, compiled music calendars and tracked down old recordings.[3]
