Richard Vereš is the mayor of the Slezská Ostrava borough and has held the post for eight years.[3][4] In the 2026 municipal elections he headed the ANO movement's list in Ostrava and ran for mayor of the city.[4]

According to Ostravská Drbna, with more than 94 percent of the precincts counted, the ANO movement was ahead with 26.6 percent of the votes. Vereš said the movement had paid the price for taking part in the government.[2] Before the elections he told iDNES.cz that the composition of the coalition is decided by the movement's local representatives, not by its chairman Andrej Babiš.[3]

After the elections Vereš said that the ANO club would choose a negotiating team and talk with all clubs in the council about priorities and the distribution of portfolios; it has not yet ruled out any of the elected groupings.[1]
