Jan Dohnal is a Czech politician for ODS and the mayor of the statutory city of Ostrava.[3] He took office after a new broad coalition was formed, following the departure of Tomáš Macura from the mayor's post in 2023.[3]
2026 municipal elections
In the municipal elections in Ostrava, held on 9 and 10 October 2026, Dohnal leads the srdcOVA list, made up of ODS, KDU-ČSL, TOP 09 and non-party candidates. Voters decide the composition of the 55 seats of the city council, and the mayor is then elected by the newly constituted council.[3] In a pre-election debate on TN Live in Ostrava, Dohnal said, according to Parlamentní listy, that seven parking garages had opened during the current term, the most in the city's history, and that more were being prepared.[2]
Work as mayor
Ostrava and Katowice signed a memorandum on closer cooperation covering, among other things, transport, strategic planning, investment, and science and research. The document creates no legally enforceable obligations.[4] On that occasion Dohnal said that the memorandum is not the beginning of a relationship between the two cities but an agreement on developing it further.[4] In an interview for the programme Česká jízda on Info.cz, he spoke about Ostrava's demographic development and about a plan to create a cross-border metropolitan area with Katowice.[1]
