In the Boleslavský deník project “Starosto, vyřeš to!” (“Mayor, sort it out!”), readers voted on what they consider the biggest problem of Mladá Boleslav. The poll lasted one month, and the finalists were candidates chosen by the editors from nominations that readers had sent in during the summer of 2026.[1]

Voting results

The most votes, 60.9 percent, went to Old Town Square in Mladá Boleslav. Second place went to parking problems in the northern part of the city, with 30.4 percent of the votes. Third place was shared, with an identical result of 4.3 percent, by dirty pavements and streets and a lack of affordable municipal housing.[1]

Old Town Square

Old Town Square lies in the historic centre of Mladá Boleslav. According to Boleslavský deník, it was revitalised in the past at a cost of roughly 100 million crowns; a fountain and a stainless-steel water cascade imitating the course of the Jizera, complemented by sculptures made of Cor-ten steel, were built on the site of the former asphalt surface. The works also included an underground car park with a green roof and a park.[1]

According to residents of the city, the square deserves more trees and lawns instead of granite and concrete surfaces. According to the newspaper, some people also speak critically of the installed sculptures, which in their view do not fit the character of the historic centre. Local business owners say that roughly two thirds of the shops on the square have closed over the last few years, and in their view the space should not serve merely as a transit route out of the city.[1]

Further course of the project

Boleslavský deník announced that in a follow-up article it will look at Old Town Square from the point of view of the future and is to approach the candidates for mayor of the city, asking how they would solve the problem. According to the newspaper, the project “Starosto, vyřeš to!” will then turn into the project “Starosto, sledujeme Tě!” (“Mayor, we are watching you!”), which is to follow how the new city leadership deals with the result of the poll.[1]
