Litoměřice is a town that is the seat of a district court and of the bishopric of the Litoměřice diocese, with the bishop's residence [1][2].
Internment of Cardinal Trochta
From 19 July 1950 to 16 January 1953 the then bishop of Litoměřice, Štěpán Trochta, was interned in the bishop's residence. According to Novinky.cz, his movement was restricted to the residence although he was not criminally prosecuted; on 16 January 1953 he was arrested and later sentenced to 25 years in prison [1][2]. According to the prosecutor, State Security watched him even while he slept [2].
After the amnesty of 1960 Trochta returned from prison, and in 1968 he was rehabilitated. He then resumed the office of bishop of Litoměřice, and in 1969 Pope Paul VI appointed him cardinal. He died in Litoměřice on 6 April 1974 [1][2].
Judicial rehabilitation in 2026
On 1 October 2026 the District Court in Litoměřice rehabilitated Trochta for the period of internment in the residence. The rehabilitation of 1968 had not covered this period. The petition was filed by Jan Kratochvil, director of the Brno-based Muzeum českého, slovenského a rusínského exilu 20. století. Judge Markéta Bitterová said that the petition was justified; the lawyer and the prosecutor waived the right to appeal [1][2][3].
