Ostrov is a town in the Karlovy Vary area. It operates a municipal sauna in a building from the 1970s, the modernisation of which is nearing completion in 2026 [1][2].

Municipal sauna

In autumn 2023 a warming room clad in aspen-wood boards was added to the building. In 2025 the town had the roof completely repaired and insulated; it is also prepared for the future installation of photovoltaic panels. In 2026 the work moved indoors. The total cost of the reconstruction is roughly 35 million crowns [1][2].

According to Deník and the Czech News Agency, the renewed complex will offer five saunas: a classic Finnish sauna, a bio sauna, an aroma sauna, an infrared cabin and a steam cabin. A cooling room, crushed ice, an outdoor plunge pool and a Priessnitz walk will also be available. The capacity at any one time is to double to 40 visitors. The earlier town leadership had considered building a new sauna centre, the cost of which would have been several times higher [1][2].

The town has already chosen the operator of the sauna. A single admission is to cost 260 crowns for two hours, plus 15 minutes for changing; seniors will pay 125 crowns. The sauna is to open to the public at the beginning of October 2026 [1][2]. The town carried out a preliminary market consultation on housing development in the Vlečka area near the centre, where according to a study 400 to 600 flats could be built, and according to mayor Pavel Čekan some of the developers approached would be willing to build there under certain conditions.
