The High Court in Olomouc is an appellate court based in Olomouc.[1] It hears appeals against judgments of regional courts, and, according to the available case, also against a judgment of the Regional Court in Brno.[1]

Decision in a criminal case from the Jihlava area

On 30 September 2026 the court upheld the judgment of the Regional Court in Brno by which a senior citizen from the Jihlava area was sentenced to 17 years in prison for the murder of his nephew.[1][2] The case concerned a shooting in the street in Třešť, which took place in front of firefighters and police officers called to a fire at a house that the man himself had set.[1][2]

The presiding judge of the panel that decided the appeal was Vladislav Šlapák.[1] According to him, the panel concluded that camera footage from the scene shows that the defendant committed the act knowingly and with deliberation, not in affect, as the defence argued, which sought a requalification to manslaughter.[1][3] The presiding judge said that the footage shows the man, after verbal contact with a relative, stepping behind the fire engine, drawing and loading a weapon, and then approaching the victim and firing.[1]

Prosecutor Jaroslav Kouřil said at the appeal hearing that nothing extraordinary had happened before the shot that would justify the act, and that requalification to manslaughter could not be considered.[1] Defence lawyer Pavel Hála, by contrast, argued that it was a "situational failure of a deeply unfortunate man".[1]

By its judgment the court also upheld the convicted man's obligation to pay the four surviving relatives a total of CZK 7.25 million as non-material damages.[1][2]
