On 27 October 2026 the ODS Executive Council dissolved the party's local association Plzeň-Slovany. According to Martin Baxa, ODS chairman in the Plzeň Region, the leadership responded to disagreements over the arrangement after the municipal elections in the Plzeň city district of Slovany.[1][2]
Background of the dispute
The Slovany district had long been a stronghold of ODS, and the party won the elections there this year with 25.81 per cent of the vote and eight seats. The eight-member council group, however, split into two halves: four councillors joined a coalition with ANO, STAN and the grouping Pro Plzeň, with the support of the Christian Democrats, while the remaining four went into opposition. According to the Czech News Agency, the current deputy mayor from ODS is to remain in office in the new coalition, and the mayor will be a representative of ANO.[1]
The Executive Council had reportedly already warned the association with a "yellow card" before the dissolution and set a week for remedy. According to Baxa, no agreement was reached after the talks.[1][2] The chairman of the local association said before the dissolution that he does not consider participation in the coalition a reason for dissolving it, because ODS won in Slovany and is to take part in running the district.[1]
Status of the members
The dissolution does not end the ODS membership of the members, of whom there are more than forty. They have three months to join another local association or to apply to the newly established association Plzeň – Nové Slovany, the creation of which the Executive Council permitted. If they did not join anywhere within three months, their ODS membership would lapse. According to Baxa, the party leadership has a selected group of people who will found the new association.[1][2]
Departure of Lumír Aschenbrenner
The dispute took place against the background of the departure of Lumír Aschenbrenner, the long-serving mayor of Slovany, from ODS. He ended his party membership on 20 October 2026 after 35 years; he had been district mayor since 1998. The ODS leadership had earlier distanced itself from him because of billboards with which he indirectly supported the ANO candidate Lucie Kantorová before the second round of the Senate elections.[1][2]
