David Ondříček is a Czech film screenwriter and director. He is the son of the cinematographer Miroslav Ondříček [1]. His earlier films include Samotáři from 2000, Šeptej and Jedna ruka netleská [1].

Work and style

In his films, in his own words, Ondříček stresses collaboration with actors. "I consider them not only interpreters of characters but co-authors, colleagues and often friends," he said about working with actors [1]. In preparing his new film, by his own account, he wrote the screenplay directly for specific actors and cast them without a casting call, and the screenplay was further revised during rehearsals and shooting [1].

The film Kluci to vidí jinak než holky (2026)

Ondříček made the film Kluci to vidí jinak než holky, which loosely follows his film Samotáři [1]. It is an auteur comedy set in present-day Prague that follows seven characters at various stages of life who are looking for answers to the questions of who they are and whether they have lived up to their ideas [2]. The leading roles are played by Jaroslav Plesl, Martha Issová, Václav Neužil, Denisa Barešová, Vojtěch Vodochodský, Anna Kameníková and Jan Nedbal [1][2]. The music for the film was composed by the British band Rhumba Club, led by the musician Tom Falle [1][2].

Ondříček said of the new film that it tells about his friends and their children, about how people succumb to an image of themselves and how little they listen to one another [1]. On returning to contemporary themes after a period of historical films, he said that he is returning to what is close to him and what shaped him as a filmmaker, specifically to the films Šeptej, Samotáři and partly Jedna ruka netleská [1]. On the intention of the film he added that film has always been for him a dialogue between what he himself feels and what audiences find in it, and that he hopes the new film will open such a dialogue again [2].
