Samotáři is a Czech film from 2000, the second feature-length film made by screenwriter and director David Ondříček.[1]

Character of the film

According to the Czech News Agency, the film helped define David Ondříček's authorial style, which combines everyday dialogue with a distinctive musical track.[1] The server Novinky.cz says this poetics also appears in Ondříček's film Šeptej and that his newer film Kluci to vidí jinak než holky loosely follows it as well.[2]

Influence on David Ondříček's work

In connection with preparing the film Kluci to vidí jinak než holky, the director himself said that he was returning to what had shaped him as a filmmaker, and alongside Šeptej and Jedna ruka netleská he named Samotáři in particular.[1] He added that he wants to find again among audiences the way of storytelling and the relationship to music that are, in his words, his own.[1]

Follow-up film

The film Kluci to vidí jinak než holky, which loosely follows Samotáři, will be released in Czech cinemas from 22 October 2026.[1] Its leading roles will be played by Jaroslav Plesl, Martha Issová, Václav Neužil, Denisa Barešová, Vojtěch Vodochodský, Anna Kameníková and Jan Nedbal.[1][2] The music for the new film was composed by the British band Rhumba Club, a project of musician and producer Tom Falle.[1][2]
