The SPD movement has convened a national council for 8 November 2026 to assess the movement's failure in the October elections.

The Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) movement has convened a national council (grémium) for 8 November 2026 because of its failure in the October elections. The party's deputy chairman Radim Fiala said so on 24 October in the Czech Television programme Týden v politice.[1]
Election result
In the municipal elections of 9 and 10 October 2026, SPD candidates won a total of 166 seats, compared with 492 in 2022. No candidate of the movement succeeded in the first round of the Senate elections. In most regional capitals SPD did not get into the councils this time and remained in six; in 2022 it had councillors in all 13 regional capitals, including Prague.[1][2] The movement's chairman Tomio Okamura said that the results confirmed nationwide support of around eight percent, but that the expectation that at least one SPD candidate would advance to the second round of the Senate elections was not fulfilled.[1][2]
The council
According to the Czech News Agency (ČTK), the council is to evaluate the election result and the leadership will answer for it there. The movement is to have analyses of the results available, and leadership elections await it next year. Fiala said that SPD had not succeeded and must be prepared for the next period; he neither ruled out nor confirmed whether he would run again for his post and is considering both options.[1][2]
Fiala earlier named as causes that SPD's main themes, such as migration, relations with the European Union and the Green Deal, had not been successfully promoted, and that in many places the coalition with PRO, Svobodní and Trikolora from the elections to the Chamber of Deputies had not been repeated.[1][2]
