The ANO movement, Starostové pro Ostravu and the Ostravak group signed a coalition agreement at Ostrava's city hall at 9 a.m. on Thursday, 22 October 2026. The three parties had agreed on the coalition a few days earlier. The coalition holds 37 seats in the 55-member council of Ostrava: ANO won 18 in the election, Starostové 12 and Ostravak seven.[1][2]
Composition of the city leadership
The new mayor is to be Richard Vereš of ANO, aged 31, who has been head of the Slezská Ostrava district. According to the daily Novinky.cz, he would become the youngest mayor in Czech history. The first deputy mayor is to be the Starostové chairman Aleš Boháč, in charge of the environment. The mayor is to be responsible for finance, equity holdings, strategic development and security.[1][2]
In the 11-member city council, ANO is to hold five seats including the mayor, Starostové four and Ostravak two. For Ostravak, Lukáš Semerák is to be deputy mayor for transport and information technology and Michal Mariánek deputy mayor for health care. For ANO, the deputy mayors are to be Markéta Langrová, Petr Holuša and Lucie Baránková Vilamová, with Martina Jarošková as a councillor. Besides the first deputy mayor, Starostové will take culture and sport (Tomáš Výtisk) and education (Patrik Hujdus); Jiří Jureček is to be a councillor without portfolio.[1]
The coalition plans to reduce the number of full-time politicians from nine to seven, which is to save roughly 40 million crowns in the 2026 to 2030 term.[1]
Opposition
The srdcOVA group (ODS, KDU-ČSL and TOP 09) with 13 seats and Motoristé with five remain in opposition. According to both outlets, on the Wednesday before the signing srdcOVA offered Starostové and Ostravak cooperation without ANO and the mayor's post for Starostové, which they rejected.[1][2]
