Tomas Bata University in Zlín

Tomas Bata University in Zlín (UTB) is a public university based in Zlín. It was established by Act No. 404/2000 Coll., effective 1 January 2001.[2] It has six faculties and almost 10,000 students.[3][4]*

Origins

University teaching in Zlín began in 1960, when a branch of the Slovak University of Technology focused on chemical and mechanical engineering technology was set up there. In 1969 the branch became an independent Faculty of Technology of the Brno University of Technology. The Faculty of Management and Economics followed in 1995.[1] The act establishing the university transferred both Zlín faculties and the halls of residence from the Brno University of Technology to the new institution.[2] Tomáš Baťa Jr. supported the founding of the university and agreed that it should bear his father's name. He chaired its board until his death in 2008.[1] For the history of the company whose founder gave the university its name, see Bata.

Faculties

The number of faculties grew after the university was founded. The Faculty of Multimedia Communications was created in 2002, the Faculty of Applied Informatics in 2006, the Faculty of Humanities in 2007 and the Faculty of Logistics and Crisis Management in 2009.[1] The university also includes the University Institute, a library and halls of residence with a canteen. It offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes.[3]

Leadership

On 29 September 2026 the academic senate re-elected the incumbent rector Milan Adámek for another four years. He won only in the third round, with 20 votes out of 38. His new term begins on 15 December 2026. Adámek has led the university since late 2022; from 2014 to 2022 he was dean of the Faculty of Applied Informatics.[4]
