Penny Market is a discount chain that in the Czech Republic belongs to the German Rewe Group, alongside the Billa chain.[1] At the end of 2025 the chain had 439 stores in the Czech Republic, eight more than a year earlier. During 2025 the company opened nine outlets, closed one, renovated four, and expanded the sales floor at a further 20 stores.[1]

Finances

According to the financial statement in the Collection of Deeds, the Czech company's revenue in 2025 reached approximately CZK 64.9 billion, about five percent more than the previous year. Net profit rose year on year by 3.5 percent, to roughly CZK 1.2 billion.[1] The company employed on average 6,706 full-time-equivalent staff, compared with 6,351 a year earlier, and its wage costs rose by about nine percent, to CZK 3.6 billion. The company has had three executive directors since 2019.[1] The parent Rewe Group exceeded revenue of EUR 100 billion for the first time in 2025.[1]

Management

Since 1 October 2026, Mathias Mentrop has been chief executive of Penny in the Czech Republic. He succeeded Draško Lazović, who, according to the company, is moving to a more senior position within the Rewe Group in Germany.[1][2] Mentrop has been connected with the Czech branch since 2015, when he joined as head of the sales department, becoming operations director in 2018. He is returning to the Czech Republic after more than three years heading Penny's Hungarian branch.[2] During his earlier time in the Czech Republic, the chain passed the threshold of 400 stores.[2]

According to a report by MediaGuru, Penny wants to continue expanding its store network, modernising it, and cooperating with local suppliers.[2]

New management and last year's financial results

Mathias Mentrop has been chief executive of the Penny Market chain in the Czech Republic since 1 October 2026, replacing Draško Lazović. According to the company, Lazović is moving up within the Rewe Group in Germany. Mentrop returned to the Czech Republic after more than three years heading Penny's Hungarian branch; he had been connected with the Czech company since 2015, when he joined as head of the sales department, becoming operations director in 2018.[2][1]

At the end of last year the chain had 439 stores, eight more than in 2024. Last year Penny opened nine outlets, closed one, and renovated four.
