The bridge over road I/35 in Hodkovice nad Mohelkou is part of a grade-separated junction that connects Hodkovice and the Český Dub area to the main route between Liberec and Turnov. According to news websites, the new bridge was to open on Thursday 15 October 2026, ending the traffic restrictions that had lasted since April.[1][2]

The original bridge served for 53 years. Water seeped into the structure, the concrete cracked, the edges of the girders were damaged and ruts formed in the carriageway. The Ředitelství silnic a dálnic also pointed to exposed, corroding longitudinal prestressing anchors and corrosion of the reinforcement. Petra Drkulová, spokesperson of the directorate, said that, given the bridge's age and the extent of the damage, they decided to demolish it and build a new one.[1][2]

Demolition of the original structure began on the evening of Saturday 11 April 2026. Road I/35 was closed in both directions for this, and eleven tracked excavators with hydraulic shears and breaker hammers worked on the bridge.[1]

The closure of the bridge restricted access to and from the town in the Turnov–Liberec direction. Passenger traffic was routed along local roads, while lorries used I/35 and the exit at Jeřmanice. Bus services had a replacement stop at the Hodkovice railway station.[1]

The construction also included lengthening the turning lane in the direction from Turnov so that it meets current standards and improves traffic safety. The new bridge is to have roughly twice as many street lamps as the original, which had six. The work was carried out by the company Stavební firma HOBST, and the cost reached 72 million crowns excluding VAT.[1][2]
